A Must-Read Fit After Thirty Book Recommendation

Written by: Robin Arroyo

As a product reviewer for Fit After Thirty, I am normally used to researching new fitness gadgets, working my buns off to exercise videos, or testing yoga pants and jog bras to find neat things that we can recommend to all of you. So, during a recent business trip to sunny California, to discuss and retrieve products for review, I was surprised to find some books in my assignment bin.

It makes sense that Suzy would ask me to review books, as I am an avid reader of fitness and self help books, and have years of experience in and around the fitness world, and have a triathlete-fitness trainer for a brother, whose expertise on all things fitness has made me more familiar with the topic than I ever even cared to be.

No problem, I thought. I can do “book reports”, fully expecting that my first assignment would be a diet or weight lifting book. Leave it to Suzy to throw me a curve ball. She handed me the book called Stop Self-Sabotage: Get Out of Your Way to Earn More Money, Improve Your Relationships, and Find the Success You Deserve, by motivational speaker, Pat Pearson, M.S.S.W.

And I'm Not Talking About Your Man

Last year when I wrote articles about vibrators and doing Kegel exercises to improve your sex life and overall uro-gynecological health, some people close to me accused me of writing about sex too much - telling me I might be limiting my blog’s appeal to just single people.

Whoa! Hold up! (screeching brakes sound effect in your head goes here). Where the hell is it written that single people are the only ones interested in sex?

Who says that if a woman has kids and/or gets married, somehow the sexual part of who she is shuts down? Okay, I know the harried life of a family woman makes it hard sometimes to fit sex into her life, but in my opinion, married women should be, and can be getting more and better sex than the rest of us! But regardless of marital status, I knew women were hungry for sexual information and eager to talk about it!

"Million Women Study" Shows Increased Risks For Cancer

Ladies, if you are one of those women who loves her glass of wine per day with dinner, a new study clearly indicates that you are raising your risk for various kinds of cancer by indulging.

Unfortunately, all of the health benefits with wine relative to the cardiovascular system, do not apply, when it comes to the risk for developing cancer. A new British study which followed 1.28 million women between the ages of 50-64, to determine if there is a link between their alcohol consumption and development of cancer. The study showed that even one glass ofany type of alcohol per day - including wine- increases a woman’s risk of developing breast, liver, and rectum cancer.

From A Washington Post Article about the study, here is the scary part of the calculations:

Top Ten Ways To Treat From The Inside Out.

The skin is said to be the largest organ of the body. It is an elimination organ which helps the body rid itself of toxins it does not want. That is why it is a very strong indicator of imbalance in the body.

Just to name a few: Food allergies can result in eczema, rosacea, dark circles or acne. Hormonal imbalances can result in wrinkles, dry skin, acne, hyper-pigmentation and large pores. Jaundice can cause yellowing of the skin. Disruption to the blood’s alkalinity-acid balance can result in skin eruptions in various forms.

Dehydration of the body is seen in dry and wrinkled skin, Thyroid problems can result in the same. Cancer in other organs can cause sallow skin, and skin cancer itself results in a myriad of symptoms of the skin such as moles and discolorations.

A Near Cure-All

In keeping with the theme of Lance Armstrong from earlier today, I thought I’d tell you about a wonder food that performs almost as well on the body as Lance does on his bike. It is truly the Lance Armstrong of health foods! Can you guess what it is?

Tour Of California Speeds Through Town

I took this photo from the curb of a Pasadena residential street as Lance and fellow cyclists pedaled by on the Tour of California on Saturday. Okay, I know you can’t tell it’s Lance, because of my poor photography skills, but he’s the seventh one back, in the black and yellow helmet!!

If you read my post on Lance awhile back, you know how much I admire his athleticism (and what a hotty I think he is), so it was immensely exciting to see him up close on Saturday, during the Amgen Tour of California race.

Yes, I was about 7 feet from his hotness as he sped by! The best part was that they did a five mile loop several times, so I got to see him pass right by me more than once!!!

Here is a close up photo of him at LA Times Sports, just so you know it really is him in the black and yellow helmet!

Look Good While Working Out Pregnant!

Okay, all of you pregnant *f.a.t. sisters and those planning on becoming pregnant - I’ve got a new line of clothes for you! You know that my philosophy is that all women should look and feel good during their workouts, because fitness is not just about your body - it’s about your mind and spirt! And let’s be honest -  looking frumpy is just plain de-motivating. Pregnant women tell me it’s even harder to not feel like a Frump-a-Lump when exercising, because, well….there’s a big lump attached to them.

So maybe there’s not much you can do about the Lump part, but I got your back on the Frump-a- part of the equation.  I’ve just discovered a company created by two women, with an emphasis on maternity fitness apparel! It’s called BornFit.com, and I think you are going to find their clothes to be affordable, practical and attractive! With any luck, we’ll get to review some of them for you, but for now, go check out the site!

Stop His Suffering During Your Time Of Month!

Do you ever wish that your man was a little more understanding about your mood swings and cramps the week before your period?  We sometimes forget that the men in our lives can suffer almost as much as we do during PMS, because they have to live with us! The irony is, the week that you need him to most understand your needs, is the week that he’ll be less receptive to your method of communicating them. (ie. barking, hollering, crying, screaming, bitching).

Okay, some of you will think I’m being hard on my *f.a.t. sisters, because most of you probably aren’t that bad, but a lot of women are like a party you don’t want to attend, when it comes to their PMS behavior.

So, why not let a guy hear what he needs to hear from another guy? Print out this article from Man’sPlace.com and give it to your boyfriend or husband, and it’ll be like his own little survival guide. The only thing I see missing from his advice is for the man to offer his woman a foot rub or back massage when she has PMS. Maybe you can scribble that in yourself!

And What's Wrong With That?

When I was about eight, my mom had a doctor’s appointment that required her to relinquish her kid duties to my dad one morning. This meant it was dad’s job to get us ready for school. A bad hair day for me, turned into a bad day all around for my poor dad, who did not know that my bangs were a hairspray-forbidden zone. Unfortunately for dad, he found this out, a couple spritzes too late, amidst screams of: “That’s not how mom does it!”

Sometimes, though, it’s not the kids screaming at dad about his approach, but it’s their moms who find it hard to relinquish control to their husbands. A mom can find herself expressing criticism about the way her man is handling his parenting tasks, even if his way is working just fine. Dudes do it differently - so if your son or daughter isn’t in danger,  just accept it.

Ladies, we can’t on the one hand, want men to take on more domestic tasks, and then bash him for how he does it! Give the guys a break and embrace the idea that there is more than one way to do things.

If it gives you a little more time to work out and take care of YOU, by letting him take over for awhile, then don’t look a gift horse in the mouth!

See if you can relate to this video on JuiceBoxJungle .

Embrace A Feeling Of Disgust Over Large Portions

I went to dinner the other night, and my entree was large enough to feed a small city, with a few ounces  left over. It reminded me that managing portion sizes is a huge issue (no pun intended) for a lot of people. So, I have an idea that will help us all redefine “fat” and stay fit in our thirties and beyond.

It’s called developing a grossed out sensibility relative to portion size. Here’s how it works - when you are faced with a plate of food at a restaurant that looks like it could feed three people without any of them walking away hungry - choose to be grossed out. Embrace the idea that this much food, in your stomach at one sitting - goes completely against nature and wreaks havoc on your blood sugar.
