Don't Take Pity On Her!

I have a friend who is preparing to buy his first house, to take advantage of the current buyer’s market. Since he’s been tightening his wallet to save for the down payment, he has been avoiding the bars, and eating out less. Last weekend though, a party took him to a bar, where his newly conditioned frugal spending habits had him gasping at the cost of a single beer. Eight bucks!
He said it made him realize how much money he used to drop on alcohol in one weekend, without ever thinking twice. Reigning in his spending on beer and wine has had the added benefit of a loss of about 10 pounds, without him even trying to lose the weight.
So when I read this story about lagging Girl Scout cookie sales, it reminded me that my friend isn’t the only one cutting back on extra beverage and food expenditures.
My initial response was the same I have every time one of those girls in the funny green dress comes to my house to sell me Thin Mints - I felt sorry for the knot-tying, oath-saying, campfire-singing, badge-wearing, business leaders of tomorrow. I thought, how sad for those little door to door salespeople and how sad for an American tradition to be dying because everyone is broke!

Welcome Back, Kristen!

You remember these two, right? Well, let me refresh your memory. These are the Townsends, the couple in Texas who won our Paradise Pointe Lovers Getaway contest. During the process of talking to Kristen to send her the prize she won, I learned all about this almost Fit After Thirty (29) gal who found our site by Googling ‘how to stay fit in thirties’. In learning about her and her husband, I felt inspired by her unique, young-couple perspective on fitness.
If you’ve been reading this site for awhile, you already know that it is my firm belief that couples who play together stay together, and that sports and exercise is one of the best ways to share time with a significant other. Being that Kristen and her man are newlyweds who are doing just that, I found them to be inspirational, and thought that she’d offer a unique perspective to all of you *f.a.t. readers! So, I asked her to be a contributor to Fit After Thirty! Here is her take on couple time through fitness.

The Same Ones You Can Develop!

Right after 9-11, I had a job that took me out of town periodically. I hadn’t been a huge fan of flying prior to that, but the increased airport hassles and heightened security issues really took my anxiety about the entire airport experience, up a couple notches. Since my arrival flights home always coincided with dinner time, and the last thing I wanted to do was cook, these nights became pizza occasions.

Oprah Investigates Medical Mistakes

I’m a huge proponent of taking responsibility for your own health, and not trusting blindly in doctors. Tuesday’s Oprah show highlights some of the reasons why we’d all be wise to do just that! They are discussing medical mistakes - including the incident that almost killed Dennis Quaid’s newborns.
Important Lessons About Human Behavior Addressed!

You may have all heard about the recent pornography study by a Harvard business school perv - I mean, professor - which ranked States by their level of online porn consumption. The results found Utah to rank number 1 in online porn consumption - with the highest number of online porn subscriptions. I know what you’re thinking: Does *f.a.t. Suzy just look for excuses to write about sex, or what?
Answer: Kind of.
Reason: Because sex and health/fitness are inextricably connected. A healthy body has a libido; an unhealthy one does not. A healthy body “performs” well sexually, an unhealthy one does not. A balanced appetite for sex is a sign of a healthy mind and spirit and an addictive appetite indicates a problem.
So, what does the new porn viewing study have to do with health, fitness, and diet, you ask? Keep reading and I’ll tell you.

PE Class Is Changing For Some

Since I’m such an old school-traditionalist, I’m surprised about my own enthusiastic reaction to the latest fitness trend that is happening in some schools across the nation.
High tech fitness equipment is now being used in some elementary PE classes, as part of the standard curriculum. As I explained in my article about used gym equipment, fancy machines found in national fitness clubs can be quite affordable when bought as refurbished equipment. Some schools are incorporating such equipment into their programs.

The Link Between Media Exposure and Depression

When I was in college, I met an old soul of a guy, who, despite his chronological age of 20, was like talking to a man many years older. His name was Thomas and he had a crush on me. Although I too, was a bit introspective and probably too serious for my age, Thomas’ maturity seemed over the top to me.
I just couldn’t reciprocate with the type of feelings he had for me. Maybe I was intimidated by his knowledge of Bach and Beethoven, or just plain bored by it, or maybe too embarrassed to walk around with a guy who was comfortable enough in his own skin to sport boots that looked like something straight off of Danielle Boone’s body.
