Increase Your Chances For Dieting Success!

I’ll admit, I’m not big on formal diets and rigid approaches to diet and exercise, (probably because I have been blessed with genetics that have let me get away with never having to adhere strictly to a diet in order to maintain my weight), but I do recognize the need some of you have for that kind of structure.

For that reason, I’ve got the perfect book recommendation for you! The reason I’m a big fan of this book is because I am a big believer in the mind-body connection, and this book emphasizes the important connection between the two.

The Complete Beck Diet For Life book is a great read for anyone who wants to learn skills to address some of the mental motivations behind your eating habits. You will learn cognitive therapy skills that just may be what has been the missing link in your current approach to weight loss.

This is not the typical weight loss/dieting book, though. Beck’s approach involves efforts that involve a dieter to do some prep work which will help them along the way. This may not be the quick fix approach that many dieters would like, but if you are really wishing to learn skills that will extend beyond just the next few weeks, that you can incorporate into your relationship with food for the long haul, this may just be the book you need!

How To Share Fitness With Your Man

By: Kristen Townsend

Pick up a copy of any fitness or health magazine, and you are sure to be confronted with images of beautiful, vibrant, beaming couples exercising against spectacular, sunny, mountainous backdrops.  You can almost hear their sweet, encouraging speech to one another, “You can do it!  Only 2 miles to go!  I’m so proud of you!”

This ideal assumes several things:

A) Both partners enjoy exercise and make it a priority in their lives; B) The couple enjoys one another’s company and finds encouragement in each other’s “coaching”; and C) The relationship regularly incorporates healthy communication.  I hope you and your partner are able to claim A, B and C at all times throughout your relationship.  If, however, you traverse the same peaks and valleys that we do, keep reading…

Ingraham Delivers Low Blow To McCain

Have you heard about the political squabbling going on between Meghan McCain (John’s daughter), and Ann Coulter and Laura Ingraham? This is the verbal battle going on in the media right now, which escalated to Ingraham’s regression into the fourth grade, by slamming McCain about her weight issues.

Here’s the background: Meghan McCain is a political blogger who considers herself Republican like her dad. It started with her blogging criticism about fellow Republican, Ann Coulter’s political style and hard, off putting approach.

This caused Republican, Laura Ingraham, to discredit McCain as a ”Valley Girl gone awry” and “a plus-sized model.” There is nothing wrong with trying to make the point that she thinks that the beautiful, yet heavy, 24 year old McCain, is not knowledgeable about which she speaks about, but what’s up with bringing her weight and looks into the mix? I’ll tell you what’s up: Ingraham must not have gotten the memo that in order to be a Fit After Thirty Hotty you don’t slam other women on their weight. (Perhaps Ingraham isn’t bothered by not getting to be a part of our club. Go figure).

Don't Take Pity On Her!

I have a friend who is preparing to buy his first house, to take advantage of the current buyer’s market. Since he’s been tightening his wallet to save for the down payment, he has been avoiding the bars, and eating out less. Last weekend though, a party took him to a bar, where his newly conditioned frugal spending habits had him gasping at the cost of a single beer. Eight bucks!

He said it made him realize how much money he used to drop on alcohol in one weekend, without ever thinking twice. Reigning in his spending on beer and wine has had the added benefit of a loss of about 10 pounds, without him even trying to lose the weight.

So when I read this story about lagging Girl Scout cookie sales, it reminded me that my friend isn’t the only one cutting back on extra beverage and food expenditures.

My initial response was the same I have every time one of those girls in the funny green dress comes to my house to sell me Thin Mints - I felt sorry for the knot-tying, oath-saying, campfire-singing, badge-wearing, business leaders of tomorrow. I thought, how sad for those little door to door salespeople and how sad for an American tradition to be dying because everyone is broke!

Unfortunately, all of the health benefits with wine relative to the cardiovascular system, do not apply, when it comes to the risk for developing cancer.
