"Real Woman" Fit After Thirty Hotty

Suzy and I have always been inspired by “real” women and how they manage to stay fit while juggling busy careers and families. By “real” women I mean the not so rich and famous gals. As we all know, celebrities  have a definite advantage when it comes to staying in shape, because a live - in nanny, personal chef, trainer and in-home gym take a lot of the work and time commitment out of the struggle to maintain good health.

This is not to diminish the hard work, commitment and sweat that is still required to have the body Madonna does,  just that it’s more impressive to us here at *f.a.t. headquarters when women with “real” schedules are able to do it without a lot of those things; and many having full time day jobs on top of it!

Be A *f.a.t. Mom To Be!

On the heels of our Halle Barry pick of the week yesterday, I thought it would be a great time to talk about pregnancy after the age of 35. As we mentioned in yesterday’s post, Halle just gave birth to a baby a few months ago. In fact, women over 35 having babies, is becoming more commonplace as more women pursue their careers and put off marriage until their thirties and forties.

Lately, many Hollywood celebrities have had babies over 35. Some of the most recent ones are: Salma Hayek, Nicole Kidman, Brooke Shields, Madonna, Courtney Cox, Marcia Cross. (See more information on Celeb moms 40 and older)

Lack Of Sleep Has Major Health Ramifications

With the advent of electricity, Americans get on average, three hours less sleep per night than our ancestors did before the light bulb. Now it seems that all of the latest electronic media and gadgets are an even bigger distraction, causing widespread sleep deprivation that has a great percentage of the population hooked on caffeine and energy drinks to get them through the day.

I have always been a person who becomes a poorly functioning zombie after just one night of poor quality sleep or not enough hours of sleep. My body needs a full 7 to 8 hours, and if I get 6 I won’t be thinking clearly halfway through the next day; less than 6, my body literally starts breaking down until I take a nap. I will start to get a headache and often even a scratchy throat until I take a nap and get that extra hour my body needs. So, I am always amazed by people who can consistently pull “all nighters” because of a partying lifestyle, heavy studying, crazy work hours or motherhood.

Walmart Water May Not Be Safe

Hey moms, I know these are penny pinching times and you may find yourself at Wal-Mart for all those weekly must haves, but pass on the Wal-Mart water and go for a different brand for now. I found an article on Yahoo News which discusses tests that were done on many bottled water brands. Two brands were not good. One of which was Wal-Mart bottled water. It had high levels of contaminants. These contaminants were things like: bacteria, caffeine, the pain reliever acetaminophen, fertilizer, solvents, plastic-making chemicals and the radioactive element strontium. Yum. Just what I want in my water! Staying up on our water consumption is great, but the last thing we want is to be doing more harm to ourselves than good! And we certainly don’t want our kids consuming all of those chemicals! Wal-Mart disputes the study, but while the jury is still out, read the full article and perhaps buy a different brand in the meantime!

Every mom knows that a million little tasks stand between us and quality time with our children.  Munchkin   is a company that makes my job as a mom easier.  I have been a fan of their products, for awhile, using their SnackCatcher everyday for my kids’ snacks on the go. But now it’s not just their products that are getting my attention. Their Project Pink campaign has also made me take notice of some great efforts happening to aid the fight against breast cancer.

Project Pink is putting a spotlight on breast cancer prevention so that moms don’t let their own health take a backseat to their duties as mothers. When you think about it, our number one duty should be staying healthy for our kids, or none of the other things we do for them will matter!

"Real Woman" Fit After Thirty Hotty

One of the reasons Michelle and I started this site was to inspire women to be the best versions of themselves that they can be. We wanted to help combat the negative stigma attached to the word “fat” by redefining it, while also reducing women’s stereotypes about aging. We think it is inspiring to read about other women’s health and fitness success stories.

There are so many women who have found a way to either successfully overcome health and weight issues, or who have managed to maintain a lifelong fitness regimen allowing them to ward off health and weight issues. We are going to start showcasing “real women” with “real” lives who we think are great role models for all women! Sometimes all it takes is one positive story to give a hopeless person the extra boost of motivation that she needs! These stories are from ”Real Women” Fit After Thirty Hottys submitted by readers. Our first story was submitted by Anh Fergis from Scottsdale, Arizona

You Never Know When You'll Have To Use It

Do you remember these guys from the show Emergency! Well, I thought they were cute as a girl, and as a Fit After Thirty woman I still think they’re cute. But as a mom, the idea of paramedics takes on a whole new meaning than cute guys to ogle in their tight blue pants. My worst fear is that paramedics would one day have to be called to my house because of a health or safety risk to one of my kids. But if it were to happen, I’d like to know that I was prepared to do whatever I needed to help my kids before the paramedics arrived.

So let’s talk CPR - what every mother hopes she will never have to perform on her children, or anyone else’s.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is done when a child is not breathing (respiratory arrest) and the heart has stopped beating (cardiac arrest).  Doing CPR may help start the child’s breathing and heart beating again. If you start CPR early and do it correctly you may prevent an infant or child from dying.

When a child’s heart stops, brain death begins between 4-6 minutes later, and the chances that the ambulance will arrive before that is unlikely, so every parent should be prepared to administer lifesaving support.

Have We Lost Our Freakin' Minds?

You know how sometimes you’ll hear a news story that you know must be a joke, and so you do a reality check in your mind on what day of the year it is to verify whether it’s April Fool’s Day?

And after said reality check, when you realize it’s nowhere near April 1st, you seek out the original source to see if it falls into the category of credible, or if instead, it came from one of those spoof web sites? (And you hope it did, because you hate the story so much that you don’t want it to be true)

Well, that happened to me last night. And after it happened, I had to chug a glass of wine and contemplate my increasing loss of faith in humanity, and my burgeoning suspicion that half of my own gender might be certifiably insane. Are you ready to hear the story? Get your wine and have a seat.

You can’t watch entertainment news lately without seeing pregnant celebrity after pregnant celebrity.  From Halle Berry to Nicole Kidman, to Gwen Stefani, Tori Spelling, Brooke Burke, and Salma Hayek. If they aren’t pregnant than they’ve just delivered and it seems that somehow they all look great very soon after delivering. How could this be?

A lot of my mom friends and pregnant friends have been asking me to write an article on how to lose the baby weight.

The Fit After Thirty Three Mommy Must Haves

Yesterday I woke up with pain when I blink my right eye and tenderness under the bottom lash line in the outer corner. There wasn’t anything visibly wrong with it to the naked eye, (or to the fully clothed eye either, for that matter), but by day’s end there was a little redness where I had been feeling the pain under the bottom lid.

I remembered that a year ago my niece had a serious tissue infection around the eye that required a strong dose of antibiotics. Her infection had also started with pain and minor redness. I called my sister who lives out of state, to find out what the infection was called and determine whether I should get in to see the doctor. The girl in the video puts it best. Eye infections suck; and I wanted to make sure this little problem didn’t move into my eye.

My sister is not a doctor, but close to it. She’s a mom. That’s damn near equivalent to having an MD! I normally fare pretty well with solving my own health matters, but I’ve had very little experience with eye issues, so being that my sister tends to four little sets of them plus her own, she pretty much corners the family market on eye infection knowledge.
